If anyone would like me to drive a support vehicle, please let me know. I don't have a good truck for the job so we'd need to find one or rent one. _________________ John Smith |

Hey! My name is Matt from NYC and I am thinking of renting a van and driving out to Vancouver days before the start. At this time my buddy Dave is not sure if he can get off from work for that long to participate. He will not know for another couple of months (he needs to kiss up to the bosses). But if it doesn't go through do you think you are interested? I believe there are two options.
It will be either I drive out solo to Vancouver and then pass the keys to the van to a support truck driver for 10 days who at the end of the event can hop onto a plane back home or
Pick up a support driver as I drive across to share the driving then hand over the keys exclusively to them for 10 days and then at the end of the event can hop onto a plane back home.
What say you? Any takers? _________________ Matt

Dan Hamilton in Brooklyn drove the Penskie support truck last time. He rented it in San Fran, drove it across then back to NYC... believe it died on the last mile, tranny blew (not the kind in heels).
I doubt one of those would last on 2 cross countries. He could share with you more on the costs and logistics. _________________ GTS250 //

Here's the plan ( so far)
Load the GTS into the truck, drive to Seattle / Vancouver , arrive one day before the Start (may stop in Seattle to see my Dad).
The truck would carry up to 4 People ( 6 if you really like eachother) and can haul two scoots in the back, if we add a trailer I could haul a sheite load of scooters.
I am looking for someone who is available to passenger / drive out and then drive support back (JRSJR???)
F-350 superduty Deisel 6.4 ltr gets 13 city and 18 hwy(@59 mph)

Some people have a legitimate fear/concern of putting there bike (along with a half dozen others) on a private trailer to transport it to the start. Especially going cross country! My luck it would crash, I'd be waiting in Vancouver with $3,000 invested, another $1k in hotels reserved... and no scoot.
Too bad you probably not in the market for a new F-350... could buy a new one, have it waiting in Seattle... have someone drive it home, if you need it for support, great, if not, Owell.
3300 miles, average cost of diesel right now, your fuel economy, is the same as shipping ForwardAir. _________________ GTS250 //

This coming year is looking very doubtful for a Penske repeat. Now that I'm back on two wheels, I'd hate to spend prime riding time in a rental truck, so my harebrained scheme to do support from the saddle of my BMW is still percolating.
Based on 2008 experience, the capacity of the truck was 99% a liability until it was time to transport entire scoots (or their earthly remains). It guzzled gas, was not much fun on roads like the observatory access (complete with warning sign not to drive trucks or RVs there), rode like ... a truck, and was way too much vehicle for carrying gas and spares. I could easily carry spare belts and tools on the Beemer. If we have to transport a scoot or scoots, the Beemer can take two of us to a rental place (assuming the bizarre set of circumstances from '08, in which the rider of a wrecked scoot grabs a new ride, will not repeat).
And just for the CB historical record [g], I'm from Cape Cod (Joel's in Brooklyn) and yes, the big yellow brick died within shouting distance of the Penske place in Brooklyn, but it was some engine management system issue, not the tranny, which spent most of its CB time in passing gear.

And this is why I ride to the start and then ride home when it's over!!!! I was totally self sufficient in 08 and intend to do the same in 10. Although it is nice to know that there is someone out there watching our backs. Just my 2 cents worth. Dan you had our backs in 08 and it would be great to see you in 10 and I don't care what your riding. _________________ smooothrider |

Dave, the plan would become feasible if there were just two scooters in the back of my truck, Mine and another. this would save on 2X forward air and 2X one way tickets BOS -SEA. And we would have some backup on the ride back across.
as far a a trailer...IF there were more riders interested we could RENT a heavy duty "proper" trailer to haul West one way. Yes, shit happens, but that truck is designed for bustin' ass down the highway with a load on.
This ride is going to be a challenge for me, my legs and knees aren't going to like it one bit, I will feel much better with a friendly vehicle "having our backs" or at least mine. _________________ "So far behind that I think I am ahead..." |

I might be interested in this method of getting me and my scoot across from new england to BC.
Looking into the options/costs etc of forward freighting the scoot etc.
I have a 4x8 trailer big enough for a couple of scoots... |

Scooterme, you haven't really introduced yourself, what type of scooter do you have and what are you doing to prep it and yourself for the "wicked hard" drive back?
as far as the trailer, it may be best to rent a uhaul trailer one way and cut it loose , so to speak in Seattle.

Right on.
My name is Simon, I live about 2 miles from the finish line in Portland.
I have a GTS 250. I am investigating auxiliary tanks, but the only modification from stock so far to the scoot is a PM pipe.
The scooter is well broken in, I have about 18,000 miles on the clock, so the biggest part of the planned prep involves full servicing. |
