The 2023 Scooter Cannonball continues to use this handicap-adjusted scoring system, as established in 2012, to
rank entrants riding eligible scooters. Riders are also grouped into classes based on scooter type, and their
performance is scored comparatively without factoring in handicaps.
No monetary rewards or cash prizes are given out; instead, the event confers bragging rights and often medals
or
similar items to those who complete it. Sponsorships are allowed, as long as they don't financially or
otherwise
incentivize winning.
Organizers provide a preferred route, though it's not mandatory to follow. Each day's route features five
control
checkpoints - a start, three intermediate, and a final finish checkpoint. Riders must leave from the start and
hit
all checkpoints to earn points that day, with four route segments in total.
A mobile app is used to log riders' progress and submit timecard and photo proof each day. Points are given
based
on adherence to a standard time between checkpoints. The closest to the target time gets full points, while
others
are deducted based on how far off they are. Handicaps adjust the time of travel, based on scooter size, age,
and
modifications, providing a balanced competition.
Since 2018, bonus checkpoints have been included for added navigation challenges and to encourage following
the
same route. These must be claimed before reaching that day's finish checkpoint, and riders must score on each
segment to be eligible.
